Course Details
 

Introduction 

The Certificate in TESOL is a 120-hour course that gives you the fundamental knowledge and skills in the classroom to teach English as a second Language (ESL). It is designed for university graduates, professionals who are changing careers or someone who with little or no experience in teaching English as a foreign language. 

 

Objectives

  • To develop and hone participants’ skills in teaching listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar
  • To raise awareness of teaching English in the 21st century

 

Admission Requirements

The course is open to fluent English speakers with the minimum English language requirement in any one of the following :

  • IELTS academic Band score of at least 6.5
  • Paper-based TOEFL score of at least 550
  • Internet-based TOEFL score of at least 79
  • RELC placement test score of 70 and above

Participants would also need to have at least two years of study in an approved tertiary where English is the medium of instructions and this is verified by the institution. (eg. Academic transcripts or course completion letter)

Note : Shortlisted applicants will be required to attend a formal interview.

 

Content

The course offers 4 modules covering basic principles of TESOL:

a) Theory of Language Learning

How second language learners learn English
Factors involved in learning a second language

b) Teaching Methodology

Classroom Language
Lesson Planning
Games and TELL (Technology Enhanced Language Learning)

c) Teaching and Assessing Language Skills

What is Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing
How to teach and assess Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing

d) Teaching Grammar to Speakers of Other Langauges

What is grammar
How to teach grammar

Participants will be expected to develop lesson plans for the teaching component.
Each of the 4 modules will be formally assessed.

In addition, there will be at least 6 hours of teaching practice (microteaching and/or teaching practicum).

 

Teaching Approach

The communicative approach, which requires active participation, will be adopted for the course. Participants will learn to reflect on and assess their own learning and teaching as well as to examine the teaching of their peers.

Participants will be involved in a variety of practice activities to help them develop knowledge base of TESOL.

  

Certification 

A Certificate of Achievement will be presented to each participant for successfully completing the course and meeting the assessment requirements as well as the 80% attendance requirement.
